Start with specifics, not a list of adjectives
Words such as “kind”, “fun” and “easy-going” are positive, but they are hard for another person to respond to. Specific details create conversation openings.
Instead of only saying that you enjoy weekends out, mention the kind of weekend you actually look forward to: a long walk followed by lunch, live music, a museum, football, cooking for friends or discovering somewhere new.
Choose photos that help someone recognise you
Your main photo should make it easy to see you clearly. Use a recent image that looks like you now, with your face visible and without heavy editing.
- Include a clear individual photo rather than making people guess who you are in a group.
- Add other photos that show something about your everyday life or interests.
- Avoid using several near-identical selfies when different photos could tell someone more about you.
- Do not include private information in the background of a photo.
Write for the person you hope to meet
A useful profile gives some indication of the connection you are looking for without turning into a long list of requirements. Describe the qualities or type of relationship that matter to you in a respectful way.
Being clear can save time for both people. It is better to be accurate about your intentions than to write what you think will attract the largest number of matches.
Give people an easy opening message
Include one or two details that naturally invite a question. A favourite place, a hobby you are learning, a dish you make well or something you want to try can all give another person a comfortable way to begin.
Before saving the profile, ask: “Could someone who has never met me find two or three things here to ask me about?”
Keep the profile current and honest
Update details that no longer represent your life, interests or intentions. Accuracy builds trust and makes the first conversation easier because neither person has to work around misleading information.
Do not publish contact details, financial information, your exact home address or other sensitive information in a public-facing profile.
